Dark Star Brewing Co. - Sunburst Golden Ale

4.8% ABV

"A hint of initial sweetness adds to the fruitiness and grapefruit tang of this summer ale without detracting from its clean flavour and rich hop aroma. "

The Pour

An offering from Dark Star Brewing Co. in the UK, this Golden Ale pours a nice yellowy-gold, straw-like colour. Lots of effervescence, with two fingers of white fluffy head. Crystal clear with no haze.

Right away you get a wonderful grapefruit and tangerine note. There is a light, light maltiness present. Not a pungent beer, a mellow aroma with a nice overall hop nose.

You do get the nice citrus flavour of the Kentish hops, but the flavour isn't as pronounced up front as the aroma. Slight sharpness, crisp and refreshing. A nice bubbly but light mouth feel. A dry beer. Through the finish there is some lingering grapefruit to the back of the throat. Not the biggest hop flavour, but very pleasant overall.

Overall Impression

This is definitely a thirst quenching seasonal offering. With the lighter malts (as can be expected with a Golden Ale), the hop flavour becomes the star of the show. They are predominant but not overpowering. This is a very enjoyable beer for the summer. I would rate it a B+. This could be quite sessionable at a mere 4.8% alcohol by volume.
