East Meets West: Garrison Partners with Phillips Brewing on Big, Bold Collaboration Brew

Halifax, NS

On June 24th, Matt Phillips of Phillips Brewing Co. in Victoria, BC, stopped by to help Garrison kick-off their new "Mash-up Series" of collaboration brews. Belgian IPA is a seriously hoppy golden strong ale that marries the newer American IPA style with the more traditional Belgian Triple. The two breweries developed a joint recipe, contributing yeast, hop varieties and techniques to produce something truly unique.

“It was good fun to work with such a great beer team,” Phillips said. “Nice to see that on both coasts, we speak the same flavour language about beer!” Video footage was shot throughout and will be released on the Garrison and Phillips websites.
“We involved all the brewhouse staff,” said Garrison Brewmaster, Daniel Girard. “It was just a great, relaxing day of brewing.” Local homebrewers stopped by to witness the process. More collaborations are lined up with other great brewers nationally and internationally as a way of learning, educating and promoting the creative spirit that makes craft brewing so exciting.

The project took on a deeper meaning after tragedy struck the Garrison team. Long-time employee and graphic designer, Colin Allin, working from Nicaragua, was shot during a robbery and passed away on July 2nd. To help with medical and funeral expenses, a dollar from each bottle of Belgian IPA sold will be donated to the Allin family. To honour Colin’s memory, an annual NSCAD award for aspiring design students will be established in his name.
Garrison and Phillips Mash-up Belgian IPA is a limited release available at the brewery and in select private stores in Halifax only.
