The Pour

Pours a thick midnight black with a quarter inch mocha coloured head. Very little head retention and some nice lacing left behind.

The Aroma

The aroma is heavy with roasted malts and coffee. Also some sweet candy notes as well.

The Taste

The taste is sweet with a good dose of coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt. It has a full body with a creamy mouth feel and nice bitter chocolate finish.

Overall Impressions

My overall impression of this beer is why aren't they charging more money for it? This is exactly what an imperial stout should taste like. Its big, well balanced and full flavoured. This is a stout that keeps up with "big dogs". Look out Founders we have a competitor! I would rate the a 9.5 out of 10

Nova Scotia’s Most Successful Microbrewery Teams up with Nova Scotia’s Newest Micro

Halifax’s own Propeller Brewing Company has collaborated with Port Williams’ Sea Level Brewing for the first time to create a one-time release celebrating Nova Scotia’s thriving craft brewing community and Nova Scotia’s emerging hop industry.

The project was born in 2009 when Propeller’s President John Allen and Sea Level’s Owner/Brewer Randy Lawrence joked around over a pint about creating a collaborative one-off beer. The two chuckled a bit over the idea but quickly shifted from a casual pint to the serious business of making this collaboration a reality. The liquid result from their session is ALPHA%DOG Wet Hopped Collaboration Ale.

"We're really excited about this project - two local breweries coming together and using 100% local hops to create something really unique. It's a testament to what the craft brewing movement is all about" says Allen “And Randy is the wet hop beer expert in Nova Scotia” Lawrence has produced wet hop beers for over a decade in the province.

This collaboration is not the first time the two have worked together: Lawrence was brewing for Propeller in the early 2000’s and helped to develop Propeller Brewing Company’s award winning London Style Porter.

The copper coloured beer is brewed with 100% local Cascade and Willamette hops from Lazy Acres and Sea Level hop farms in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. These hops are harvested and shipped as “wet” un-dried hops to Propeller Brewery in Halifax where Sea Level brewer Randy Lawrence adds them to the brew kettle while their oils and resins are still at their peak.

The Propeller/Sea Level collaborative brew will be available late this summer at both the Propeller Cold Beer Store and Sea Level Brewing Company and select private liquor stores in Halifax.

Brewery Vivant - Sgt. Peppercorn Rye

"Rye pale ale. Standard rye with a touch of carmel rye produces a dry and spicy flavor with beautiful color. Green peppercorns are thrown in the kettle as a well as "dy spiced" in the fermenters for a little kick."

The Pour

Poured from a half gallon growler, this beer is a fiery orange / red in colour. A one and a half finger head consisting of tight white bubbles crowns the glass. Lots of carbonation streaming from the sides of the glass.

Aroma

A very fresh nose. Spicy notes dominate with a slight bitter to sour note present. Very pleasant.

Taste

Right away there is a huge breadiness. Lots of cereal grains as well as a nice peppery spiciness. With a very light mouthfeel, this ale finishes with a slight bitterness. Interesting in a pleasant way.

Overall Impressions

In the summer we visited this brewery in Grand Rapids, MI. I had picked up a 4-pack of their Farmhouse Ale for review, but the taste got the best of me and they were all finished before I had the chance to do a formal review. Well, I wasn't going to let this tasty treat do that. My neighbour brought this back from Michigan for us to enjoy. With an emphasis on Belgian styled ales, this too was a solid beer. Very refreshing, with a stellar flavour profile. Not too heavy, and a nice light mouthfeel. A solid "B+".

Be(er) Responsible Day - Take the Pledge Against Drinking and Driving

Labatt raises young people's awareness of moderation and the dangers of drinking and driving

La Brasserie Labatt is taking advantage of today's second Global Be(er) Responsible Day to deliver a responsible-consumption message, with special efforts aimed at young people urging them to take the pledge against drinking and driving and to drink moderately.

In addition to promoting responsible drinking among young Labatt customers across Quebec, brewery employees will be meeting students on the campuses of Université du Québec à Montréal, Université de Montréal and Cégep André-Laurendeau, where classes are now back in session, to raise their awareness of the dangers of excess alcohol consumption and of driving while inebriated.

"The aim of this operation is to get a written pledge from young adults not to mix alcohol and driving," said Jan Craps, Labatt's General Manager, Sales, in Quebec. "For more than 20 years, Labatt has sought to be a leader in the fight against drinking and driving and to be the country's predominant voice for moderation, especially among young adults. We are aware that we share responsibility for getting people to change, and we are working hard to deliver a positive, non-moralistic message to show that it is possible to plan the trip home and avoid ruining celebrations with unfortunate events."

On this second annual Global Be(er) Responsible Day, teams of Labatt employees will be promoting the popular new Take the Pledge campaign against drinking and driving, urging students to make an immediate written pledge via Labatt's Facebook page. "We want to reach the maximum number of young people for our message to be heard and to work together to fight the scourge of drinking and driving," Mr. Craps stated. "In recognition of each pledge, Labatt will give one dollar to our partner Operation Red Nose and the True Patriot Love Foundation, which assists Canadian military families." Beau’s Oktoberfest a Finalist for “Best Ontario Tourism Experience”

With little more than a week left until the 2011 Vankleek Hill Oktoberfest begins, Beau’s All Natural Brewing has just received word that their annual event is a finalist for a 2011 Ontario Tourism Award, in the category of “Best Ontario Tourism Experience.”

The news comes along with announcements from Beau’s that Saturday tickets for this year’s Oktoberfest are nearly gone, and more than half the tickets for the three day-festival are now sold. Just after the Oktoberfest dust settles the Ontario Tourism Awards will be handed out, on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the Convention Centre in Hamilton, ON.

“‘Best Ontario Tourism Experience’ is a fantastic way to describe what the Vankleek Hill Oktoberfest offers,” says Steve Beauchesne, who co-founded Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company with his dad, Tim, in 2006. “For the nomination to come just now as we are putting the final touches on this year’s festivities is a perfect reward for all the hard work and planning that goes into making this such a fun event. It’s a real feather in our cap,” he concludes.

Vankleek Hill Oktoberfest is an annual Bavarian celebration hosted by Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company. This year’s event has expanded to three days of Bavarian celebration – Friday, September 30 to Sunday, October 2 – held at the Vankleek Hill Fairgrounds at 92 Main St. W in Vankleek Hill. A charity fundraising event, this year the Oktoberfest is slated to raise $50,000 to benefit the Canadian Red Cross, Good Food Revolution, the Vankleek Hill Agricultural Society, and additional community-building non-profit organizations.

The Pour

This IPA pours a nice copper colour with a 1 inch off white head. Nice lacing that stays around for a while.

The Aroma

The smell is great with strong malt, hop and pine notes. Some hints of citrus too.

The Taste

This is a full body IPA with a creamy mouth feel. Strong hops bring out a nice pine and citrus profile. This beer has a considerable malt taste as well.

Overall Impressions

This was a very well balanced IPA that can give the U.S. micro brews a run for the money. Does it compare to the Dogfish 60 min....close! I would not hesitate to pick this up again. I would rate this a 8.5 out of 10.

Garrison Brewing - Imperial IPA

"Launched and enthusiastically received at the first annual Halifax Seaport Beer Fest in August 2007, this ale has quickly become known as the hoppiest beer in Atlantic Canada! Unfiltered Imperial I.P.A. is a robust, full-bodied and complex brew in the Double IPA style. An intensely fruity aroma combines nicely with a malty caramel backbone, clear hop bitterness and lingering citrusy finish. This beer is for the true hophead!"

The Pour

This beer pours a gorgeous golden orange like a fiery sunset. A generous two fingers of fluffy tan/khaki cloured head. Nice peaks and small bubbles with a decent effervescence streaming from the glass. Hop haze and unfiltered. Stunning.

Aroma

Tangerine and grapefruit dominate the nose. They slowly subside to a wonderful sweet maltiness. This beer smells mouthwateringly good.

Taste

The smoothness of this beer is incredible. As it washes over your tongue, you are rewarded with those huge citrus flavours you would expect from a North American Imperial IPA. Undertones of a piney bitterness smack the top and sides of the mouth through the finish. Wonderful!

Overall Impression

I must admit that I have been excited to try this beer after sampling Garrison's wonderful Hopyard IPA (click here for review). Even with high expectations, I was not disappointed. The big citrus and piney bitterness is balanced well with the slight sweetness of the malt backbone. This would be right up there with you Maharajah's and Hopslam's. I would rate this an "A+". Rumour has it that several limited edition Garrison brews are heading to Ontario. I'm going to be first in line. Can't wait to see what they do with a stout.

Taverne Gaspar: An Exciting New Destination on Rue de la Commune

At the helm, Zach Suhl, former owner of Brunoise Restaurant and Brasserie and Chef Mario Guerrera, formerly executive chef of the W Hotel and sous-chef of Cube Restaurant. The Chef will offer accessible and comfort cuisine inspired by British gastropubs with French and Quebecois accents. Among the house specialties, a trio of savoury tarts, scallops with pork belly and spatchcock Cornish hen, in addition to the "Daily Special" menu offering traditional dishes. Local beers on tap will be featured, including the Gaspar house beer, a Montreal lager prepared by the brewers of MTL Premium Lager. In addition, classic and creative cocktails, a wide selection of spirits, and a carefully selected wine list, will be offered.

With authenticity and conviviality in mind, the design of the tavern has been entrusted to Camdi Design. Raw materials, oak tables and woodwork, copper accents, antique mirrors and fixtures all perfectly complement the stone walls and the original cachet of the room, nestled in an old 19th century warehouse. The long bar made of old joists and beams salvaged during the structural work is crowned by a copper counter and completed by a raw bar where one can sit and watch the shucker prepare oyster and seafood platters. An eclectic background music mix of indie, classic, blues and folk rock will complete the Taverne experience. The tavern's seating capacity will be 120, and in the summer season will overflow with an additional 60 on a terrace on the rue de la Commune. It will also have a room accommodating up to 60 people, available to patrons for the organization of private events.

For the Antonopoulos Group, the opening of the Taverne Gaspar also represents another initiative supporting the development of Old Montreal. "Following the success of Méchant Boeuf Bar-Brasserie in the neighbourhood, we are very proud to create a new local destination on rue de la Commune. "You’ve got to love coffee to truly appreciate this phenomenal brew. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and sweetened imported chocolates, Sumatra and Kona coffee. We’re actually not sure if this is some type of coffee cake or a beer. Either way you can drink this ale with a fork. Breakfast Stout has an intense fresh roasted coffee nose topped with a cinnamon colored frothy head that seems to never fade and makes you wish breakfast could last forever."

The Pour

This stout pours like a viscous motoroil. One finger of mocha coloured head. So dark, so rich, so delicious.

Aroma

Wonderful espresso and coffee notes. Huge dark and milk chocolate aroma. Amazingly rich and amazing in every way.

Taste

Wonderfully balanced blend of coffee and espresso. Rich malts, chocolate, slight bitterness and silky smooth. This has an amazing mouthfeel that washes over your tongue without a hint of alcohol burn. Incredible.

Overall Impression

One of my favourite beer experiences has been a private tour of Founders and getting to spend some time with Dave Engbers. Amazingly, they were brewing this very beer the day we were there. This is just an incredible stout. The backbone of KBS and CBS. Chocolate, espresso, amazing. A solid "A+".

Canadian Breakfast Stout: Taproom Release Information Announced

The taproom release at 235 Grandville Ave SE in downtown Grand Rapids will begin at 11 a.m. on October 1. There will be about 1700 bottles available for purchase at $18 each. A strict limit of two (2) bottles per person will apply, and all bottles will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Because a line is expected to form before 11 a.m., numbers will be handed out so that the line can

remain intact once the taproom doors open. CBS will be featured on draft, and CBS merchandise will be available in the Founders company store, which is on the north end of the taproom. As with all Founders specialty products, growler fills will not be available for CBS.

There has been a great deal of anticipation and speculation regarding the upcoming release after the success of Blushing Monk, the series’ debut, earlier this year. Canadian Breakfast Stout is the epitome of why Founders launched the Backstage Series: it brings some of the brewery’s most sought-after beers, which have been available primarily at the taproom or at a few select events, to a much larger audience.

Canadian Breakfast Stout is an Imperial Stout brewed with a blend of coffees and imported chocolates, then aged in spent bourbon barrels that have most recently been aging pure Michigan maple syrup. The final product has had stellar reviews and is currently the fifth highest rated beer in the world on www.BeerAdvocate.com.

“Releasing small specialty batches is a great way for us to connect to our core beer enthusiast,” Engbers explains. “Fundamentally, we are a small brewery, and we love to do things our own way. This isn’t about flooding the shelves with a beer that we hope people will try; it’s about producing

the best damn beer we can brew and offering it to those enthusiasts who have supported our passion for great beer.”

The company is not revealing any additional releases in the series, but Engbers says they will consist of many of the “popular one-offs” that have been offered in the taproom over the years and have become favorites among patrons and brewery staff. “I think part of what people love about Founders, besides our beer, is that we listen to what they are saying,” says President Mike Stevens. “With our new line, now we can offer them more of what they’ve been asking for.”

The company expects to release one more product in the 2011 Backstage Series later this year.

Fuelled by the summer's successful community park projects the Molson Canadian Red Leaf Project switches gears starting this weekend to support the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, a program that's removed almost 1 million kilograms of waste from Canadian shorelines over the past eighteen years. As part of Molson Canadian's ongoing commitment to give back to the land, the Molson Canadian Red Leaf Project hosted 20 events across the country this past summer, inspiring Canadians to volunteer to improve their local parks as well as planting 100,000 trees from coast to coast.

"The enthusiasm Canadian's had for this summer's park projects and their support for our tree planting initiative exceeded our expectations; this project has been a great vehicle to channel Canadian's passion for the outdoors into action," says Jamie Sprules, Senior Brand Manager, Molson Canadian. Garrison Releases 2nd Annual "3 Fields Harvest Ale"

Despite a rainy growing season this year, Garrison Brewing harvested fresh hops from Ashdale, Northport , New Ross and Glenholme and used Maritime barley malt to craft a truly local harvest beer!

First launched last September, 3 Fields Harvest Ale highlights the increasing availability of local brewing ingredients in this once-a-year brew. It demonstrates the viability of locally-grown raw materials while celebrating their unique characteristics.

"We're basically showing off how great a beer can be when fresh, local hops are taken from vine to kettle in the same day," said Garrison president Brian Titus. "Over 100kg of wet green hops were gathered at four separate Nova Scotian farms and added right into the boil. Wet hops impart a more subtle hop fragrance and bitterness, making them a pleasure to brew with. Lemon, grapefruit, pine and ginger notes are all present to some degree in this truly special harvest brew," added Titus.

All the hops were harvested from four local fields this year, including: Meander River Farm in Ashdale, Wysmykal Farm in Northport, Ross Farm Museum in New Ross and FiddleHop Farm in Glenholme. The complex flavours showcased in 3 Fields can be attributed to the wide variety of hops in the beer. Brewer’s Gold, Cascade, Centennial, Galena, Kent Golding, Newport, Willamette and Zeus were all used in this double-sized batch.

3 Fields Harvest Ale also features 100 per cent barley malt from New Brunswick. This year's release is available at the brewery and private stores as well as select NSLC stores while supplies last.

10,000 OCB Discovery Packs Sold!

Until October 8, the LCBO is presenting a mini-OCB promotion with 13 Ontario craft beers featured in select stores across Ontario.

A central part of the summer promotion was Ontario craft beer sampler packs, prominently featured throughout stores in centre aisle displays. These packs included the ever popular OCB Discovery PackTM, a mixed six-pack featuring one beer from each of Beau's All Natural Brewing Company, Great Lakes Brewery, Trafalgar Brewery, Lake of Bays Brewing Company, Mill Street Brewery, and Wellington Brewery.

Throughout the summer, including the beer promotion, LCBO customers purchased more than 10,000 units or almost $110,000 worth of the OCB Discovery PackTM. OCB, in collaboration with tthe LCBO, designed the six-packs to introduce consumers to the range of Ontario craft beers available in Ontario. Mixed sampler packs were also available during the promotion from OCB members Cameron's Brewing Company, Mill Street Brewery and Wellington Brewery.

"Formidable Beast". What better way to toast the fall than to have a bottle of this formidable, dual character brew. At first smooth with mellow overtones of sweet berry fruit, a bite of bitterness suddenly cuts through, long, deep and lingering. Brewed with Rye Malt, it is naturally "blood red" in colour. Unlike the mythical wolf-like creature said to roam the bleak moorland surrounding Newcastle, this is real, so consider yourself warned!"

The Pour

This offering pours a copper in colour. One finger of slightly off-white head dissipates quickly. Filtered and clear of any hop haze or particles. Decent amount of evevesance.

Aroma

Malty nose. Some leathery notes. Slight earthiness. Nothing too over powering.

Taste

Light in flavour. Minimal sweet berry flavour that leaves quickly for a slight bitterness with earthy finish. Hint of a metallic flavour. Nothing overly exciting.

Overall Impressions

This was less than spectacular. The flavours were not very well balanced or pleasant. While a step up from most macro brands, this is underwelming. A very light ale that is nothing of note. I would give it a "C-" .
