Innis & Gunn - Irish Whiskey Cask

7.4% ABV

"This special bottling of Innis & Gunn has been matured in rare oak barrels from a famous distillery in Ireland. These barrels had been used to mature one of the great triple distilled Irish whiskeys. The result of this unique maturation is a big, full flavoured complex beer with a delightful warming finish. We hope you enjoy this beer as much as we do."

The Pour

Poured from the famous Innis & Gunn clear bottle. This Scottish Stout is a rich, dark cola colour. Hints of deep ruby red appear at the edge of the glass. Two fingers of khaki head crown it like the soft peaks of a root beer float.

Aroma

Hints of vanilla, toffee, chocolate and cola come through. There is a smooth scent of Irish Whiskey and well as some bready characters.

Taste

Some gentle roastiness and vanilla pod cover the tongue. Some coffee and cocoa are present. Hints of Whiskey without the burn as you continue to drink. Very nice indeed.

Overall Impressions

Liek many Ontarians, I am a huge fan of what this brewery has been doing. Taking on the task of providing commercial sized barrel aging to an entire portfolio, takes special care and skill. The execution is also remarkably consistent and of high quality. While this stout may not be a huge Imperial in style, along the lines of Founders KBS or CBS, it is a solid and sessionable stout that isn't trying to compete. A great beer to be enjoyed. You can have one or many and not be disappointed. I would give this a solid B+ to an A-.
