Top Shelf Classic Lager Scores Big!

Baysville, ON

Less than two months after its launch, Top Shelf Classic Lager is scoring big across Ontario and generating solid royalties for the NHL Alumni Association.

Top Shelf Classic Lager is the first beer released after the NHLAA inked a partnership with Lake of Bays Brewing Company in June to produce a family of hockey-themed beers.

A North American-style lager craft brewed in Baysville, Top Shelf is has since its release in October 8 arrived on the shelves and in the fridges of more than 360 LCBOs and 40 pubs and restaurants across the province and in several US states. A portion of sales goes to support the activities of the NHLAA.

“First and foremost, this is a great beer," said Darren Smith, President and CEO of Baysville, ON-based Lake of Bays Brewing Company, "and we are extremely pleased, though not surprised, with the reception it's received."

"It's been a terrific experience participating in the creation of Top Shelf," said Mark Napier, Executive Director of the NHLAA, which helps former players transition to life after hockey and raises millions of dollars per year for a variety of charities. "The way it tastes, the logo, the packaging, Top Shelf says hockey. And that's just what we wanted. We are looking forward to its continued success."

The duo have plans to distribute Top Shelf to other Canadian provinces and into more US markets before the year is out. A number of other endorsed beer brands are also in the works under the Signature Series category, starting with China Wall - Johnny Bower Vienna Dark Lager, set for release in early December.

“Best of Beau’s” Holiday 4-Pack and Winter Seasonal Bog Water Returning to LCBO

Ottawa, ON

Beau’s All Natural Brewing is launching its second annual “Best of Beau’s” sampler pack this weekend, just as the holiday season officially begins. Beau’s winter seasonal, Bog Water, will also return to the LCBO beer line-up this weekend, and continue through until spring returns. The Best of Beau’s mix pack contains four fan-favourite Beau's beers, chosen by popular vote earlier this year.

Top 4-pack votes went to Burnt Rock, a classic British-style porter brewed with a generous addition of organic vanilla beans. The vanilla provides aromas reminiscent of pipe tobacco, while dark malts offer chocolate and coffee nuances that balance the medium-bodied beer. Earlier this year Burnt Rock received a Gold medal at Mondial de la Bière in Montreal, QC, and a barrel-aged version of the beer received a Bronze medal at the Canadian Brewing Awards.

Voters also selected Doc’s Feet Dubbel, a mahogany-coloured interpretation of the Belgian Dubbel style. It features a pronounced fruitiness and malt character; spicy notes such as cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg complement its alcohol warmth. Doc’s Feet has an initial sweetness that progresses toward a dry, earthy finish.

Screamin’ Beaver Oak-Aged Double IPA was voted into the mix pack for a second year in a row. An amped-up version of the brewery’s spring seasonal Beaver River, this beer has been dry-hopped and aged on oak staves. Screamin’ Beaver weighs in at 9.9% alc./vol. and 99 IBUs. An initial flavour of grapefruit gives way to subtle oaky, vanilla flavours, along with caramel and citrus.

Completing the Mix Pack is Rudolphus VI, a Belgian-inspired IPA which features tropical fruit notes and a spicy yeast character. Late-addition hopping provides flavours of orange, unripe peach, and star-fruit, and Belgian ale yeast offers notes of pepper and intonations of clove. Rudolphus VI finishes clean, balanced, and dry with a noticeable hop character.

Beau’s winter seasonal Bog Water will also launch this weekend. Dubbed by the brewery as an “Eastern Ontario” Gruit, this rare and ancient style uses a wild-harvested herb known as Bog Myrtle (Sweet Gale), used extensively in brewing in the 1500s, to add flavour and to preserve the beer. The seasonal brew is malty with a plum-like fruitiness that is offset by a spicy, earthy bitterness.

Presented in Beau’s signature 600 ml bottles, the Best of Beau’s Mix Pack is $24 including tax and deposits; single bottles of Bog Water are $4.35 each. The Best of Beau’s Mix Pack and Bog Water are available at select LCBO locations, finer restaurants and pubs, the Beau’s retail store at the Vankleek Hill brewery, and through the Ottawa-based home delivery service BYBO (www.bybo.ca).

Beau’s “The Tom Green Beer” Milk Stout Now in LCBOs

Ottawa, ON

It’s no joke! Comedian Tom Green & Beau’s Brewery’s award-winning collaborative beer now available through LCBO stores in Ontario

Today, LCBO patrons will begin to spot bottles of new release “The Tom Green Beer” Milk Stout: a dark, creamy and satisfying variety of stout beer, created as a collaboration between Beau’s All Natural Brewing and Canadian actor and comedian Tom Green. The first shipments of award-winning The Tom Green Beer are slated to turn up at select LCBO stores in Ottawa and Toronto just before the weekend; Beau’s will roll the beer out to more stores across the province next week.

The Tom Green Beer was voted the winner of the Collaboration Nation competition at Session Craft Beer Festival in Toronto this past June, with its prize being put on the fast-track for an LCBO listing this fall. A few small batches of the milk stout were brewed by Beau’s All Natural over the summer for Ontario Craft Beer Week and a few other special events, with the intention of fine-tuning the beer for full-scale LCBO release.

The milk stout style was chosen as a tip of the hat to Tom Green’s bovine-related comic antics of the past. Says Tom Green:

“‘This is the Tom Green Beer, it’s not the Green Tom Beer; this is my favourite beer, because it is my beer...’ You can read this on the bottle. It is a reference to the theme song from the early Tom Green Show, which we shot in Ottawa. But what’s cool is it is actually true. This is my favourite beer! You may remember we used to milk cows on my old TV show. Well now you can enjoy my delicious milk stout. I am so exciting to be working with Beau’s. This beer is awesome!”

The aroma of The Tom Green Beer milk stout is a complex array of roasted malt characters, featuring notes of espresso, chocolate and a controlled smokiness. Roasted elements also dominate the flavour, but give way to subtleties such as hints of caramel and nut. Initially dry on the palate, the beer finishes with a gentle flourish of increased body and sweetness. The end result is a flavourful, robust, yet still quite sessionable 5% ABV stout.

The Tom Green Beer is certified organic, and will be available in Beau’s All Natural’s signature 600 ml bottles for a retail price of $4.85. The beer will be sold at select LCBO stores across the province starting November 1, as well as from the Beau’s All Natural retail store in Vankleek Hill and the Ottawa-based home beer delivery service BYBO (www.bybo.ca).
